GUIDE / GOOGLE TAKEOUT
Export Google Maps bookmarks
Export only your saved lists and starred places from Google Takeout, as one small zip file. On a computer it takes about 2 minutes, plus a few minutes waiting for Google's email.
About the pictures: Google Takeout only shows its screens to a signed-in account, so these are drawings of each screen with Google's exact button names (checked 29 Oct 2026). The red ring marks what to click.
01
Open Takeout on a computer
Go to takeout.google.com and sign in. Check the round profile picture at the top right: it must be the same Google account you use in Google Maps.
Use a personal Gmail account. Work or school accounts often have Takeout switched off.
Select data to include
Your account, your data. Export a copy of content in your Google Account.
02
Click "Deselect all"
Right above the long list of products, click Deselect all.
Google ticks every product at the start. Skip this and the export drags in Gmail, Photos and Drive too. If the link is missing, untick boxes one by one.

03
Tick "Maps (your places)"
Scroll down to the M's and tick Maps (your places). Leave plain Maps and My Maps unticked.
This one holds your Starred places. Plain "Maps" holds your Home and Work addresses, which are private and not bookmarks.
04
Tick "Saved"
Keep scrolling to the S's and tick Saved. Now exactly two boxes are ticked: Maps (your places) and Saved.
Google's Maps help says to make sure "Saved" is ticked. It holds every list you made: Favorite places, Want to go and each custom list.
05
Click "Next step"
Scroll to the very bottom of the list and click Next step.
2 products selected
06
Change nothing, click "Create export"
Leave the defaults as they are: Send download link via email, Export once, .zip, 2 GB. Click Create export.
Skip the repeating option (every 2 months). One export is enough.
Choose file type, frequency & destination
07
Download the zip from Google's email
Within minutes Google emails you, with a subject like Your Google data is ready to download. Click Download your files (Google's help calls it "Download archive") and sign in again if asked. If it lists more than one file, download them all.
Forwarding Google's email won't work: the download only opens for you. The link expires in about 7 days.

08
Send the zip
Attach the zip to an email or a message, or AirDrop it. It is tiny, usually well under 1 MB. Don't unzip or rename it.
If you use a Google Drive link, share it to one email address rather than "Anyone with the link".
Short version, to paste in a message
Exporting your Google Maps bookmarks takes about 2 minutes on a computer: 1. Go to takeout.google.com (signed in to the account you use for Maps). 2. Click "Deselect all". 3. Tick "Maps (your places)". 4. Tick "Saved". Only those two boxes should be ticked. 5. Scroll down, click "Next step", change nothing, click "Create export". 6. Google emails you a link within minutes. Click "Download your files". 7. Send the zip file (email, text or AirDrop). Don't unzip it. It holds your saved lists, starred places, notes on places and your Maps reviews. Nothing else.
What the export holds
- The name of every list you made in Google Maps.
- Every place on those lists, and any private notes you typed on them.
- Your starred places, with the date you starred each one.
- Your Google Maps reviews and star ratings (Google bundles these in; you can delete Reviews.json from the zip before sending).
- Your Google account email, printed on the index page inside the zip.
It does NOT include your location history, Timeline, Home or Work addresses, email, photos, contacts or passwords.
